STUDY 2:
REPENTANCE
Proverbs 28:13, HEB. 6:12
INTRODUCTION:
This is an important subject which is one of the fundamental teaching of Christ in the scripture. Nobody can lay claim to being born again without the step of genuine repentance.
What Repentance mean
Repentance is a firm conscious personal decision to change from sin (obedience to the devil) to righteousness in obedience towards God, living holy and spotless Life Heb. 6:12 Acts 3:19; 1Thes. 1:510
Ingredient of Repentance
-Acknowledge the fact that you have sinned. Rom 3:23
Confess your sins. I John 1:9
Ask God for forgiveness and His mercy. Isa. 55:7 ,
Ask for Divine ability to forsake your sins. Prov. 28:13;
Significance of Repentance
- Genuine repentance results in desirable fruits of love, peace, patience faith etc. Luke 3: 79
- Jesus our Lord and master commanded us to repent and be saved. Mark 6: 12, Luke 24: 46-47
- Peter commended it Acts 2: 37-38
- Paul commended it Acts 17: 30-31
- It leads to conversion and cleansing from sin Acts 3:19
Nobody can say he is born again without genuine repentance.
What Dead Works Mean
Dead works are thought, and actions from which we have to repent, they include:
- Sin Eph 4: 2531
- The works of the flesh Phil3: 13, Gal.5:19-21

- Empty religion and all unrighteousness II Tim3:19, I Cor. 6:911
Elements of Genuine Repentance
- Conviction: before any sinner can repent, he must be convicted that he has urgent need to make his way right With God. Ps 3 8: 4; 51: 3; Acts 2: 3 7
- Godly sorrow: This comes as a consequence of conviction by the Holy Spirit leading to repentance. II Cor 7:10
- Renunciation: True repentance involves grief and hatred for sin turning from it to God. Is 55:7
Features of Genuine Repentance
- Leads to salvation
- Comes from the Spirit
- Godly sorrow for sin
- Heartfelt confession and desire to forsake sin
- Physical manifestation of holy life, thoughts and work
Results of genuine repentance
Ps 51: 12-14.
- Cleansing with the blood of Jesus by faith. I John 1: 79
- Assurance of forgiveness. Rom 5: 1
- No more condemnation hence ability to have fruitful fellowship with God in prayer. Rm 8:1
- Justification, the new born Christian is seen as if he never sinned, he is a new creation. II Cor 5: 17
- Peace with God and man. Is 30: 15
Burden of sin is lifted resulting in a time of refreshing. Acts 3: 19
Joy of salvation. Ps 51: 12-14
CONCLUSION
Remember, God is not mocked (Psalm 86:5). The wages of sin is death but (Rom 6:23), God is ready to forgive if there is a genuine repentance. (1 John 1:9)
