Topic: The fear of God

Text: Exodus 20,21,22&23

Key verse: Exodus 20:11, 20, 26

It is common to hear people say I fear God, when they hear thunderings, or see a great disaster, but the passage of today reveals to us the true meaning of the fear of God.

The Psalmist said in Psalms 111:10  "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever." Here he teaches that to fear God is wisdom, and that obeying the commandment of God is understanding, that is, just as applying wisdom requires understanding so also, to fear God we must do his commands.

What are these commandment, our text today shows us some of them Exodus 20:10,11 talks about the sabbat referring to the Day of the Lord, but today everyday is the Lord's Day, we must keep them holy, no work of sin, flesh or unrighteousness be done to to be kept holy. Also Exodus 20:20  "...that ye sin not" it is the express will and commandment of God that we sin not he also continued in verse 26 "...thy nakedness be not discovered..." Covering our nakedness properly is God's express command, we are too dress to cover or nakedness
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."   ( Proverbs 1:7 ) therefore it is foolishness to sin, to work unrighteousness and to allow nakedness to be revealed.

Proverbs 8:13 says  "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate."  If we say we fear God then we must hate evil, hate sin, hate ungodliness
The fear of the Lord will not allow you to kill (see verse 12) for the fear of God a man will not allow his own convenience to affect others wrongly (see verse 29), the fear of God is to Make Wrongs Right (Restitution) and to do right.

It is clearly wrong to lie with animal, serve other gods, to oppress strangers or afflict widows, or to take increment on money lent out to  fellow brethren in need, or to speak against leaders or rebel against them.
(See Exodus 22:12,16,17, 16-23, 25, 28-29 )

We will consider  more in depth the commandments of God and their relevance  how God expect  us to obey them.

Challenge: the Fear of God is to depart from sin and keep  the commandments of God.

Prayer: Put your fear within me to please you and do thy will.
